Sandpit Opening

The Parent Teachers’ Association at Wanganui East School have been busy over the past few months raising money to build a large covered sandpit for the school.

The necessary funds have been raised through School Discos, Garage Sales, Raffles and selling pies.  It has been a lot of hard work by a small and very dedicated team.

We have been very fortunate that our Property Manager, Ash Whetton, is very  handy with a hammer and a saw.  He has saved us a lot of money by building it for us in addition to all his other jobs.

We were also fortunate in securing a grant which enabled us to buy lots of spades, shovels, sieves, buckets and other necessary items for having a great time in the sand!

On Monday September 2nd September we formally opened our new sandpit.  We had speeches, gave thanks to those who made it possible, and our newest pupil, Maiyhah-Lei Te Tue cut the ribbon.  That was the signal for the New Entrant class to get digging, shaping and creating.  It wasn’t long before the pristine sand was riddled with holes, hills, tunnels, towers and castles.  Everyone agreed that the new sandpit was just awesome!

Since opening, every class from Year 1 to Year 6 has had a turn to enjoy the new facility and it just goes to show that you’re never too old to build sandcastles!
