This week is Anti Bullying Week. This is an annual global event which began in Canada in 2007. This year is our first year we have participated in Pink Shirt Day, which aims to create schools and communities where all people feel safe, valued and respected regardless of age, sex, gender, ability or cultural background.
Too many young New Zealanders are experiencing bullying and it’s up to all of us to speak up and take action to ensure our schools celebrate diversity and are safe and welcoming places for everyone.
As a school we will be focussing on Anti Bullying across the whole week and this will be incorporated into all curriculum areas.
One area of increasing rates of bullying is cyber bullying: 29% of boys and 22% of girls in Primary school are reporting cyber bullying.
We are looking forward to the week ahead, please ask your child what they have been talking about in class and to share their work.
Whanganui East School celebrated the end summer with a bang just before our Easter break with the school’s first Mud Run. Due to our swimming season being cut short by two weeks, leaving us unable to hold our annual school Swimming Sports and whole school Triathlon we didn’t want our children to miss out on ending summer with a splash. With the support of the Whanganui Fire Brigade the children participated in our very first Mud Run.
The children had an obstacle course where they had to go over, through and under various obstacles, do a sponge run all while being hosed down by parents, teachers and our local fire fighters. The sun shined making it a fabulous afternoon with ninety percent of the school participating and many parents attending to watch the fun. Plans are already underway for our next Mud Run, bring on the fun!
The entire school was involved with a Wacky Wednesday fun day that included dressing up, a parade, wacky games and more….
On Thursday, Ben from the YMCA came to school and brought a very long, thick rope.
The students spent lunchtime learning how to pull their opponents over. It was a lot of fun.
