Kia ora koutou

Following the announcement from the Prime Minister we will remain at Alert Level 2.

Just a reminder at Alert Level 2, we must adhere to key health measures including:
Good hand hygiene and cough and sneeze etiquette
Staying away if sick
Keeping the appropriate physical distance from others
Cleaning and disinfecting our high touch surfaces daily
Displaying QR code posters at our entrances and encouraging all of our community to download the NZ COVID Tracer App and use it if they come onsite
Keeping a visitor register for anyone who cannot use the app. We know all these things will help to keep our community as safe as possible. Because of these measures, your child does not need to wear a face covering while at school. We will of course support them should they choose to do so.

Welcome to 2020

Welcome back to 2020, the year has started well and the children have settled very quickly back into school mode.

We welcome all our new Whānau to our Whanganui East School Community.

It has been great that we are able to offer all our children their stationery at no cost, being part of the School Donations Scheme means that we will not be asking parents for the cost of curriculum-related expenses.

Swimming has started well and this year our focus is on Water Safety skills.  Swimming is part of the Curriculum and all children are expected to swim everyday (except Friday).  Please ensure uniforms and towels are named to avoid confusion.

All children have been given a permission booklet for parents to sign to allow them access onto the Internet.

It was lovely to have a visitor in the school last week.   Mrs Barry brought in a baby lamb that needed to be cared for across the day.  She was a hungry little lamb and a very tired little lamb by the end of the day.

Celebrating Matariki

It was lovely to catch up with many of our families and ex students for our New Year Puanga celebration. The morning started wet but the rain held off.

A Pohutakawa tree was planted in memory of Gerrard Williams-Bogileka by his whānau in our Memorial Garden.

Our Roopu birds  (Kereru, Ruru and Tui) were blessed by Mātua John and then into the hall for bacon and egg butties, venison, scrambled eggs, sausages, weetbix and fruit.

Our Kapa Haka group performed and sang a tribute song to Gerrard.  It was a great opportunity then for parents and whānau to walk through the classrooms and share with the children the work they have been doing.

20th August Update

With the news that we will be at Alert Level 2 for 12 more days we will be following our Alert Level 2 Procedures:

We will be regularly reviewing all procedures to ensure we are following the most up to date advice from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health

School Contact details: office@wanganuieast.school.nz or phone: 3438054 or 0211076551

Movement in and Out of the School

Under Alert Level 2 we will have a drop off and pick up only approach to restrict the number of ‘adults on-site’.

We are aware that there may be reasons parents may need to be onsite and if this is the case please come to the office to record your name on the Contact Tracing register as a visitor or use the QR Codes that are around the school.

If a child needs to be picked up early, we ask that parents contact the office and your child will be taken to the gate with a staff member.

Drop off time: 8.20am

A teacher will be at the gate to welcome the children to school each morning

Children will be asked to hang up their bags, wash and sanitise hands before starting their day

Please keep your child home if they are unwell and contact the office before 9am

All staff will be returning to school and children will be in their usual class – if staff are unwell they will remain home

If your child has asthma can you please ensure that we have the latest version of their asthma plan

Cleaning/Hygiene

Hand sanitiser will be provided in every classroom and sanitiser stations will be set up at the designated entry and exit points – students and staff will use these as they enter or exit a room

Additional disinfectant/cloths will be available in classrooms for children and teachers to sanitise spaces and surfaces throughout the school day

Toilet blocks will be cleaned regularly

Cleaners will complete daily cleans in line with the Ministry of Health guidelines

We will continue to model good hygiene practices (coughing into your elbow, handwashing and drying) and regular cleaning of commonly touched surfaces

Physical Distancing

There is no bubble concept at Alert Level 2 so there are no restrictions on groups of students mixing with others on site.
Children and staff should be far enough away from each other so that they are not within the ‘Moist Breath Zone’ or touching each other, coupled with good hygiene practices and regular cleaning of commonly touched surfaces.

Play time activities can include access to sports equipment including playgrounds but hygiene practice of washing hands will be observed before and after playing with or on equipment

There will also be regular cleaning of shared equipment such as balls, sticks etc

We will continue to have staggered morning tea and lunchtimes to ensure no more than 100 students at one time in the playground areas

Please ensure your child has a drink bottle as water fountains will be turned off

Due to the restrictions of visitors on site Little Achievers will be postponed until further notice.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask

Kind Regards
Eleanore Barry
